already out there. Take a look at what already exists in
the market and ask yourself, “How could I improve on this?”
or “What more could I offer that hasn’t been offered yet?”

distinguish your product / business from the competition.

2. Take two existing ideas and combine them.

Most innovations come from people who are able to make
interesting connections that others might not see right
away. Look at everything that interests you and see if any
of your ideas could be combined to create something new.

For instance, if two of your interests are Gourmet Cooking
and Art History, you might think about marketing products
that are intended to beautify the kitchen and dining areas.

3. Put an old idea into a new context.

Innovation is oftentimes just a matter of putting an old
idea into a new package. In this case, the package is the
Internet — look at ideas that already exist outside the
Internet and ask yourself how they could be translated
into an Internet business. A good example of this is the

Sometimes, just the act of discussing an idea with someone
(rather than just thinking about it) will help you mold an
idea into something special. Remember that innovation is
always based on good research. You have to know what is
already available before you can start planning on offering
something new. And once you have developed that new
idea, make sure you let audience know how and why it is
new, different, and better than the competition!
